Científicos de la universidad de Colorado en Boulder, aseguran haber identificado un lugar idóneo para buscar indicios de vida microbiana antigua en Marte: la cuenca de un lago seco recién descubierto.
Aunque en la actualidad el 'planeta rojo' no posee agua en estado líquido, sí estuvo sumergido bajo vastos océanos hace miles de millones años. Y la ecuación lógica resulta sencilla: donde hubo agua, existió un potencial para la vida. Marte presentaba agua en su superficie hace unos 3.600 millones de años y, según los investigadores, el descubrimiento de un lago seco dentro de una cuenca cerca del ecuador marciano sugiere la posible presencia allí de microorganismos antiguos vivos, según informó 'Business Insider'.
El paisaje de la zona es parecido a los salares de la Tierra, depósitos de sal de aproximadamente 29 kilómetros cuadrados que, según los científicos, se originaron fruto de la evaporación del agua de los mares, dejando la sal como residuo. Los expertos están investigando la edad y el origen de estos depósitos para determinar la cantidad de agua que existió en la superficie en el pasado. Sin embargo, el viento ha erosionado las regiones donde se encuentran, lo que hace difícil estimar su antigüedad.
"Existía vida en la Tierra cuando este lago en Marte era activo y por analogía, podríamos afirmar que es posible que Marte haya tenido también vida microbiana", explica Brian Hynek, investigador en el laboratorio de la universidad de Colorado en Boulder. En este momento, no hay planes para visitar esta cuenca en busca de posibles formas de vida.
